Erica Whitson

Erica Joy Whitson teaches early childhood music classes and is the advisor to the Zephyr Show Stoppers Club for middle and high school students.

Ms. Whitson’s background includes a degree in teaching English for grades 5-12, a master’s degree in education from Hamline University, and a reading license. In 2008, after the birth of her twin girls, she discovered a love for teaching preschool music classes. Using her background in education and passion for literacy and music, she spent nine years developing and teaching preschool music curriculum out of her home. In 2018, she expanded her classes to Centennial Community Education. She also took her love for theater to start Show Stoppers at Centennial Middle School; the program’s goal is to expose students to various theatrical performances around the Twin Cities. She advised the program for 16 years before relocating it to Mahtomedi in 2021. In the advisor role, she coordinates the shows the group sees and manages the student group.

Ms. Whitson’s JOYful Noise Music classes are for children six months to six years old. She shared this about her JOYful music class. “In our preschool music class, we have a blast exploring the world of music while building essential skills that benefit our literacy, creativity, and physical development. We practice rhythm to develop our sense of timing and phonological awareness, laying the groundwork for reading and writing. Through hands-on experiences with various instruments, such as sticks, egg shakers, and scarves, we introduce music vocabulary and terminology. Our music class is also a joyful time for movement and expression, where we sing, dance, and play together, making learning a fun and engaging experience for all.”

When asked about a proud moment from her classes, she shared this, “I have lots of repeat students, and that makes me so happy that students enjoy my class and want to come back. The hugs, smiles, and pure joy from my preschool students fills my heart each week! I have one student, Jack, who I had a few years ago in class and he lives in my neighborhood now, and every time I see him he yells, "Ms. Erica" and comes running to me like I'm a celebrity. It is the sweetest thing!”

This year, the Club hosted a ComedySportz improv group and will be visiting Dear Evan Hansen at the Ordway. The Zephyr Show Stoppers events will resume in the fall of 2025. Ms. Whitson shared, “This club has grown exponentially in the few years it's been offered, and it's because of the values and commitment of our parents to give their students these amazing experiences.” When asked about Mahtomedi Community Education, she shared, “The staff I have worked with are so wonderful-they truly desire to offer amazing opportunities for students and work hard to be organized and support me in the best way they can.”
