Leading the efforts of supporting students experiencing homelessness at Mahtomedi Public Schools is Ali Middlebrook, our District Social Worker and Homeless Liaison.
November is National Homeless Youth Awareness Month. Youth homelessness exists throughout the state of Minnesota, and school districts hold a critical responsibility in ensuring students are able to access their educational rights. Experiencing homelessness includes youth who are “doubled-up” (staying with a friend or family member) or “couch hopping” (staying with a series of different people) out of necessity. In her role, Ms. Middlebrook provides necessary services and support to our students experiencing homelessness.
Ms. Middlebrook shared that she works to “ensure that school can continue to be a stable, consistent, positive place for students during a period of instability. Families have enough on their plates during these times–I don’t want them to worry about their child being able to access their education and do well in school.” Her work includes helping students and families secure transportation and other basic needs, including clothing, food, and school supplies.
Ms. Middlebrook has worked hard the last 4 years in her role to increase awareness of youth homelessness for both staff and families in Mahtomedi through staff training and outreach efforts. She believes it’s important that our community understands homelessness exists in Mahtomedi, and that students have a right to receive support. She shared about the impact she’s making: “Our ultimate goal is to support students in doing well at school. I’m grateful that in my job, I can provide hope during a time that may feel hopeless.”
