Mahtomedi’s next generation of leaders is already making an impact on the community through the Positive Peers program at O.H. Anderson Elementary School. Positive Peers is open to any interested fourth-grade student and focuses on “encouraging unity and respect within our school,” said teacher Lorie Kaehler, one of the program’s leaders. They do this through service projects, acts of kindness, and community outreach. Positive Peers meetings this year have included initiatives such as bullying prevention education, a new student welcome breakfast, making cards for veterans, and bus driver appreciation.
“Fourth grade is a critical period for the development of self-esteem and interpersonal relationships,” said Kaehler. Through education of the heart and mind, the program teaches students how to be “positive role models and to understand that they can have a positive impact on their community.” Leaders Tracie Fiola, Cassie Gralish, and Kaehler shared, “We really enjoy seeing the students get excited about helping others,” and said that this year's Positive Peers are “full of energy and enthusiasm.” Upcoming meetings will include making bandanas for the Humane Society, decorating placements for meal programs, and kindness messages.
