Fourth and fifth-grade students at O.H. Anderson Elementary School wowed their families and school staff with their spelling skills at the school’s recent spelling bee. You could hear a pin drop in the room as students worked through the 2024 Scripps spelling words for fourth through seventh grade, including words like flummox, gastritis, and voracious!
This academic competition provides students with an opportunity to practice word parts and sounding out words (key components of our district’s literacy programming). The event was organized by Kathryn Marget, Program Coordinator, Mahtomedi Advanced Academics (Gifted and Talented) program. Judges included Mahtomedi district leaders and staff, including Dr. Lucy Payne, Lindsey Scanlon, Liz Haen, and Jennifer Merthan.
The intense competition lasted 13 rounds! Julia Naf, a fifth-grade student secured the school champion title by spelling the word tostones (fried green plantains) correctly! Julia will take a qualifying test to move on to the next round (regional bee). Congratulations to Sean Unger, a fourth-grade student, for securing a second-place win and Finn Haberman a fifth-grade student, for a third-place win! Click here to see photos from the event.
