Advanced Academics

Welcome to the Advanced Academics webpage (formerly known as Gifted and Talented) for Mahtomedi Public Schools.

All students have access to differentiated instruction:

  • Tier 1:  Small group instruction allows teachers to differentiate within their classrooms, most frequently in math and reading. Students receive instruction that is at their best-fit challenge.

  • Tier 2: In our schools, teachers evaluate their formal and informal data and may form intervention and extension groups in addition to their regular classroom instruction.

  • Tier 3: Individual student circumstances will be addressed on a case-by-case basis for further enrichment or acceleration.

Identification for Advanced Academics

Mahtomedi Public Schools aligns its practices to Minnesota State Statute 120B.15.  We use multiple data points to identify students who have a readiness for advanced academics; our identification takes place in grades 2, 4, and we have a process for students who are new to our district in middle school.  The district uses a combination of ability and achievement data and rating scales to determine eligibility.

In addition to differentiated instruction and identification for “Advanced Academics,” schools use multiple data points to identify students who have a readiness for specific advanced coursework.  Beginning in grade 4 at OH Anderson Elementary school, students can participate in compacted math.  At Mahtomedi Middle School, students can participate in accelerated math and English Language Arts coursework.  Mahtomedi High School has a variety of honors, Advanced Placement (AP), and College in the Schools (CIS) opportunities that students may self-select.

Programming and Support: Our Advanced Academics Coordinator partners with teachers and teams to provide enrichment materials, activities, and professional development.

Parents of students who have been identified as “Ready for Advanced Academics” are invited to participate in the Advanced Academics Parent Group; please see more information below about that group.
